Noise Problems
A heat pump making noise does not always mean trouble. A whoosh during defrost, a hiss of steam and a soft hum are part of normal operation. Grinding, buzzing, rattling or banging tell a different story, and the sooner they are checked, the smaller the fix tends to be. If a new sound has your attention in Parker, call and we connect you with an independent local contractor.

Sound Guide
The sound and when it happens give useful clues. A noise only during defrost means something different from one at every start. These four kinds of noise are the heat pump problems contractors are called about most.
✓
Grinding or squealing. A worn bearing in the outdoor fan motor or indoor blower motor often squeals at start and grinds as it gets worse.
✓
Rattling or scraping. Loose panels, debris in the cabinet or ice building up until it touches the fan blades all rattle or scrape.
✓
Buzzing or loud humming. An electrical buzz often comes from a failing contactor or a capacitor that cannot start the motor. A hum with no start needs quick attention.
✓
Banging, clanking or screeching. Loose compressor mounts, internal compressor damage or very high pressure can bang, knock or screech. These sounds call for the system to be turned off.
Normal or Not
Parker's cold, dry winters mean frequent defrost, so a whoosh, a gurgle and a cloud of hissing steam a few times a day are normal. Ice falling off the coil can pop and crack. Expansion and contraction in the cabinet can tick on cold mornings. What matters is whether a sound is new, getting louder or happening at the wrong time.
Do not reach into the fan guard to clear debris or knock ice off the blades. Do not keep running a unit that grinds or screeches. Do not open panels to find a rattle. If a sound comes with a burning smell, smoke or sparks, switch the system off at the thermostat and the breaker and move away from it.
Grinding, screeching and loud banging are urgent because they usually mean a part is failing and can damage others. Buzzing with no start also needs fast action to protect the compressor. If the noise starts with ice on the unit, our frozen coil page explains what to do while you wait.

Before You Call
01
Does the noise come at start up, during defrost, all the time or when it shuts off? That timing tells the contractor a lot.
02
From outside the fan guard, check for sticks, leaves, toys or ice touching the fan or cabinet. Clear loose items around the base only.
03
A short video with sound makes it much easier to describe a noise that may stop when someone arrives.
Service Areas
Noise calls reach the line from all over Parker, from houses on bigger lots in The Pinery to townhomes near the town center where units sit close to bedrooms. Calls also come from Englewood, Larkspur and Elizabeth, and each goes to an independent local contractor.
